4th Graders to Take National Tests

Reminder to 4th Grade Parents,
This Thursday March 5, many of our 4th Graders will be participating in an exam by the National Assessment of Educational Progress.  NAEP Representatives and Rosa Parks Staff will be administering this exam.  It is a national exam that is given to select 4th Graders across the United States.  Please encourage your 4th Grader to get a good night's sleep on Wednesday and to eat a hearty breakfast on Thursday morning!  There is no other test preparation necessary for students other than these two important things!  Please let us know if you have any questions.

Spring Picture Day

Dear Rosa Parks Parents,

The Spring Picture Day that was scheduled for Thurs. Feb 26, will be rescheduled.  Information will be shared about the makeup date once it has been determined with the picture company.  We apologize for this change due to the snow day.

Sincerely,
Rosa Parks Staff

Rosa Parks Welcomes Dr. Connie Hebert
Dear Rosa Parks Parents,

Rosa Parks has the great fortune of welcoming National Speaker, Author, Literacy Consultant, and Parent Dr. Connie Hebert for an evening event for you, our parents, on March 3 from 6:30-7:30 PM.  Dr. Hebert has extensive experience in education and has been a literacy consultant for 47 states, Canada, Belize and Norway.  She will talk with you about CATCHING TEACHABLE MINUTES WITH KIDS during this hour long parent night.  Please RSVP by returning the flyer that was sent home on February 13.  If you did not receive a flyer you may call the school office (703-580-9665) to confirm your attendance by February 27.  Supervised childcare will be provided for your children while you attend the event.  Please see the information below from Dr. Hebert:

WHEN: Tuesday, March 3, 2015
TIME: 6:30PM-7:30PM
WHERE: Rosa Parks Gymnasium

THE TEACHABLE MINUTE is a golden opportunity to teach kids something, anywhere, FAST. It can be caught at any time, in common places, where we all live and go. It appears in a car, at the mall, around the kitchen table, at the post office, in the yard, on a plane, in an elevator, at the beach, on the subway, in a rocking chair, at the park, in the bathtub, and anywhere else you can think of. ALL kids are naturally curious.
ALL kids want attention.
From Dr. Connie:
“Everywhere we go, we can find kids who are watching adults who are engaging with devices at all hours of the day and night—using cell phones, responding to text messages, surfing the web, responding to email, and watching a lot of television. This concern raised an important question for me: How can we strike a BALANCE between engaging with devices and interacting with kids?
My goal is to help parents become experts at catching THE TEACHABLE MINUTE so they can interact with kids of all ages, anytime and anywhere. We will explore ideas for what to SHOW, ASK, and TEACH younger and older kids in common places where we all go with kids. Come learn some tips especially for Moms, Dads, and Grandparents! See you there . . .”

School Success Is Sweet

On February 13th, over 230 Honor Roll students (Grades 3-5) enjoyed a pancake breakfast at Rosa Parks.  As the Honor Rollers were served by their teachers and administrators, they enjoyed the sweet success of their hard work in school from their second quarter performance!  Keep up the great work Golden Eagles!

With All Our Heart

On February 6th, Rosa Parks Staff wore their "Red Life" shirts to kick off our Jump Rope for Heart Drive for the American Heart Association.  Lots of love for the American Heart Association!

Are you ready for the weather?
As the temperature starts dropping, we need to start thinking about snow and snow days.  Be prepared for weather-related school closings.
